Research Steps

WRITE A RESEARCH REPORT

STEP 1:
Be sure of your topic. Are you looking for an answer to a specific question or gathering general information on a broad topic?

 

STEP 2:
Choose reliable sources of information:
1. dictionaries
2. encyclopedias
3. books
4. websites

 

STEP 3:
Use at least three difference sources of information.
Better…
Grade 5 = 5 sources
Grade 6 = 6 sources
Grade 7 = 7 sources

STEP 4:
Keep a list of all your sources of information.
Make an alphabetized list.
Ask your teacher for the specific format to use.
If you are doing research using World Book Online, look at the bottom of your article. The full citation will be there; you can simply copy and paste the citation into your own bibliography, making only one change: replace [Place of Access] with the place where you are using the internet.

STEP 5
Read to get an overview of your topic.

STEP 6
Choose 3 to 5 subtopics.

STEP 7
Use cue cards to take notes.
Code each cue card using numbers or colours.
Keep a master sheet that shows the meaning of your codes.
– indicate the subtopic
– indicate the source of information

STEP 8
Sort your cue cards into subtopics.
For each subtopic, sequence your cards in a logical order.

STEP 9
For each subtopic, turn your sequenced notes into sentences.
Add a topic sentence.
Add a concluding sentence.

STEP 10
Write an introduction to your research report.
Write a conclusion to your report.

STEP 11
Revise your writing until it flows smoothly.
Revise your writing until it is in correct English.

STEP 12
Go back and read the marking rubric provided by your teacher.
Make sure you have met all the requirements.
Change your report if necessary.

STEP 13
Write a good copy of your report.
Add an alphabetized bibliography.

STEP 14
Hand in your report.
Return any materials you borrowed.
