Study Human Body Systems

Human Body Systems

A system has…
1. individual parts that work together as a whole
2. connections, usually, to other systems
3. decreased function, or no function at all, if part is
    damaged or missing.

Human bodies have 11 essential systems.

A. Match the system to the function.

1. Circulatory system
2. Digestive system
3. Respiratory system
4. Excretory system
5. Immune system
6. Endocrine system
7. Reproductive system
8. Skeletal system
9. Integumentary system
10. Muscular system
11. Nervous system

removes liquid and gas wastes
makes and releases hormones
defends against infections
supports, protects and works with muscles to move the body
creates a waterproof barrier around the body
includes organs for making offspring
detects and signals changes to the body
works with the bones to move the body
takes in, breaks down, absorbs nutrients and eliminates solid wastes
transports blood, nutrients, gases and wastes
controls breathing; exchanges gases in lungs and tissues

B. Match the type to the description.

1. cell
2. tissue
3. organ
4. organ system
5. organism

cells of the same structure & function
different tissue types working together
different organs working together
basic unit of life
composed of many organ systems

C. Tissues: cells held together by fibres or sticky materials

1. muscle
2. nerve
3. connective
4. epithelial

covers the surface of organs and the body; lines the inside of body parts
transfers signals between organs
helps body movement and helps some organs work (e.g. heart)
holds together tissues (e.g. cartilage) and connects, protects and insulates organs
