English 8 Term Outline

 A Sample Outline for English 8 : Term Two
“When reality doesn’t match our expectations, we are sometimes disappointed.
When we are disappointed, we may experience stress.
Reduce stress by checking reality before setting expectations.”

Goal – students will improve their knowledge and skills in reading and writing; they will develop an increased appreciation for reading, stories and information

Objectives
Knowledge: what the learner will know
1.    basic parts of speech, verb tenses; antecedents; structure of compound and complex sentences; vocabulary; capitalization; punctuation
2.    at least 8 literary devices
3.    at least 20 literary classics
4.    at least 40 lines of classic poetry
5.    at least 5 reading strategies
6.    at least 3 ways of responding to writing
7.    elements of a paragraph
8.    elements of an essay
9.    the purpose of stories in a culture

Skills: what the learner will be able to do
1.    articulate the strategies used to read a passage of writing
2.    write correct sentences employing literary devices
3.    find the main ideas and supporting evidence for ideas in a piece of writing and from personal experience and present them in a logically organized format
4.    infer connections between events and ideas
5.    write thoughtful responses to written material and ideas discussed in class
6.    speak and recite in front of adults and classmates

Experiences: what the learner will do
1.    read at least 10 picture books by various authors (ideally, 20)
2.    read at least 5 novels by various authors (ideally, 10)
3.    read at least 5 nonfiction books  (ideally, 10)
4.    participate in class lessons
5.    complete written assignments

Attitude: how the learner will behave
1.    demonstrate willingness to spend time reading in class
2.    demonstrate interest in borrowing books from the class and/or school library
3.    demonstrate interest in listening to stories and nonfiction material
4.     demonstrate interest in revising written work

Evaluation Methods
Knowledge: written tests  (20%)
Skills: written assignments (50%)
Experiences:  checklist of participation/completion (20%)
Attitude: observation by the teacher (10%)

Required Prerequisites
(Students who do not have the prerequisites may require additional support  from learning services, a parent or a tutor.)
Knowledge:
1.    the difference between picture books and novels
2.    the difference between fiction and nonfiction
3.    general knowledge about history, current events and geography
4.    basic understanding of spelling, capitalization and punctuation
Skills:
1.    able to bring needed supplies to class on time
2.    able to read at AR level 5.0
3.    able to write legibly in printing or cursive script
4.    able to write sentences in correct English
5.    able to rephrase written material in one’s own words
6.    able  to organize and efficiently retrieve assignments
7.    able to memorize at least 8 lines of poetry
8.    able to adjust behaviour for various classroom activities and lessons
Experiences:
1.    regularly attending class and  focusing on lessons
2.    listening to others speak and responding appropriately
3.    speaking  appropriately in front of teachers and classmates
4.    completing written work at home
5.    editing and proofreading written work and completing more than one draft of a piece of writing
Attitude:
1.    willing to trust the teacher
2.    willing to tell the teacher one’s thoughts and concerns
3.    curious about learning
4.    willing to persevere when work is boring or difficult

Materials Required
Class sets of books:
1.    novels: ‘Crispin’ and ‘The Outsiders’
2.    students need to supply their own dictionaries and thesauruses
Additional books for independent reading: from the classroom and school library
Online resources: MsRosenReads.com
Writing materials:
1.    lined and unlined paper
2.    blue or black pen, pencils, highlighters
Places: classroom and school library

Timeline
    Four one-hour English classes per week for 12 weeks (48 hours in class)
    Additional time outside of class for reading books and completing written work

B.    Skills:
1.  Can you write legibly?  (Mark will be based on the sentences below.)

2. Rewrite the following sentence using correct spelling, capitalization and    punctuation. Please use your neatest printing or cursive script.

3.    Rewrite the following passage in your own words. You may use literary devices to improve the power of the passage..

There are many genres in literature. Fantasy is popular nowadays. Children and adults enjoy ‘Harry Potter’ stories and the ‘Hunger Games’ series.  Some people also like historical novels. Stories about World War II are especially popular.  Mystery novels are still very popular.  Canadian authors Eric Wilson and Gordon Korman are popular.  Sports stories are always popular. Canadian author Roy MacGregor’s novels  are enjoyed by hockey fans….

4.    Describe how your binder is organized.
5.    Describe your ability to participate in class lessons.
6.    Describe your ability to work on assignments without help from other students during class time.
7.    Write your full name, your division and the date in the top right-hand corner of your answer sheet.
8.    Be ready to recite 8 lines of poetry aloud.

C.    Experiences:  
1.    Comment on your attendance record in Term One.
2.    Comment on the amount of time you spent doing  school work at home.
3.    Comment on how often you completed more than one draft of a paragraph in order to improve the quality.

D.    Attitude:
1.    Comment on what you learned in English during Term One.
2.    Comment on any thoughts or concerns you have about English classes.
