 SCIENCE 8 : A TERM TWO UNIT

Goal: students will understand human body systems and the basic unit of life: the cell. (This is a continuation of the unit of human body systems started in Term One.)

Objectives
Knowledge: (20%)
• know how the immune system protects the human body _________
• understand factors that affect the immune system _________
• know the purpose of each of the 11 human body systems* _________
• know the purpose of each of the 5 basic nutrients* _________
• know the main features of microscopes* _________
• know key characteristics of living things _________
• know key characteristics of animal and plant cells* _________
• understand the processes of diffusion and osmosis  _________
• know the steps of the scientific process* _________
• understand the value and limits of the scientific process _________

Skills:  (30%)
• be able to organize scientific information in various formats; e.g. experiment, outline, narrative, diagram, illustration, chart , model*  _________
• be able to conduct a scientific experiment _________
• be able to safely and effectively conduct a dissection _________
• be able to safely and effectively use microscopes* _________
• be able to identify the key concepts in a passage of scientific writing _________
• be able to identify the supporting details in a passage of scientific writing _________

Experiences: (40%)
• will take notes from scientific material and own observations* _________
• will safely use scalpels to dissect chicken wings _________
• will safely use a microscope*  _________
• will make a model of either a plant or an animal cell* _________
• will practise repeating and reciting scientific information in various formats: questions and answers, narratives, reading aloud _________

Attitude: (10%)
•  will demonstrate interest in the scientific method  _________
• will demonstrate interest in scientific concepts* _________
• will demonstrate respectful and safe use of scientific tools* _________
