Literary Theme Unit

Do you enjoy reading?
You may be ready to create a literary project!

You will need the following:
1. access to a library
2. a pad of ‘sticky notes’, or a pad of paper, pen, and 13 envelopes
3. lots of time to read, observe and think

Before you begin, choose a topic. It may be related to your family’s history, to current events in the world, or simply a genre that interests you.
1. Make sure you can find books on your chosen topic.
2. Start borrowing, and reserving, the books you need.
3. Spend at least 4 hours a week on this project.

As you read a book, have your sticky notes close at hand. Take the time to copy quotations, and their page numbers, as you read.
1. Collect quotations about life.
2. Collect information about the author’s point of view.
3. Collect examples of how geography and culture influences the story.

Keep track of your notes.
1. Have a code for each book. E.g. B1 = book 1 on your bibliography; Pic2 = Picture book 2
2. As you start a book, label an envelope with your code. e.g. B1
3. Keep all your notes for that book in that envelope.
4. As you finish a book, add a bibliographic entry to the envelope:  Author. Title. City of Publication: Publisher, date.

When you have finished all your reading, make a proper alphabetized bibliography:
Novels:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Picture Books:
1.
2.
3.
Nonfiction:
1.
2.
Poems:
1.
2.
3.

When you have finished reading, bring your collection of notes to Ms. Rosen. She will teach you how to create a literary project on your chosen topic.
