Repetition

REPETITION IN WRITING

Repetition of words:
“. . . She tried to open her eyes but the lids would not move. She tried to sit up, but she could not stir. She struggled to turn over, to move her hands, her feet, but nothing happened.  She knew that she had a body, but it was as lifeless as marble.”    (A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, Bantam Doubleday Dell, 1962, p. 163.)

“. . . She wished she were a better speller without having to work at it, she wished Yard Ape would pay as much attention to her in school as on the bus, but most of all she wished there were girls her age on Klickitat Street.” (Ramona’s World by Beverly Cleary, Scholastic, 1999, p. 41.)

Repetition of verb pattern:
“Ben paged through his slowly, reading the titles of the pieces, studying the photographs of the chests and cabinets, trying to picture them in three dimensions.”   (The Birthday Room by Kevin Henkes, Scholastic, 1999, p. 48.)
