English Language Arts

Goal – you will improve your knowledge and skills in reading and writing and develop an increased appreciation for reading, literature and information

Objectives

  2. at least 10 reading strategies
  3. three ways of making connections to written material (text to person, to text, to world)
  4. the structure of sentences and paragraphs
  5. the structure of essays
  6. at least 5 literary techniques
  7. the 5 elements of novel analysis (setting, characterization, plot, theme, style)
  8. at least 3 types of poems
  9. at least 3 new poems by memory

Competencies: (what you will be able to do)

  1. articulate at least 5 reading strategies used to comprehend a passage of writing
  2. identify figures of speech and other literary techniques in a passage of writing
  3. find the main ideas and supporting ideas in a piece of writing
  4. read for literal and inferential information, accessing background background knowledge
  5. read silently for at least 30 minutes at a time
  6. write for a variety of purposes, making connections to their own experiences, written texts, and the wider world
  7. revise written assignments in order to improve content, style, and conventions
  8. legibly present written assignments in standard English

Mathematics

  5. the difference between fractions and ratios (review)
  6. simple estimation methods

  9. the use of mathematical concepts in various cultures including indigenous peoples

  1. sequence whole numbers, integers, decimal numbers, mixed numerals, and fractions (review)
